Watch the film August 31, 2017: “Determination is Mine,” a documentary short about the journey of Malek Mohammad, an Afghan teen, determined to walk again after losing both his legs to landmines, is showing at the Laemmle Claremont 5 theatre at 1 p.m. each day through Thursday, August 31. The Laemmle Claremont location is at 450 West 2nd Street.

This inspiring film includes footage of Malek walking with his prosthetics at LLA as well as a group of students bidding him farewell when it’s time for him to return to Afghanistan.

The 35-minute film follows 15-year-old Mohammad as he travels from his hometown to Loma Linda, where he would live for two years as he received extensive treatment for his injuries at Loma Linda University Health. Mohammad fell victim to two landmines one day while collecting firewood for his mother. His legs, stripped from his body, lay several feet away from him. Two years later, in 2008, he came to America filled with hope. His goal — to return home to Afghanistan walking.

In addition to medical care, Mohammed is introduced and adapted into a whole new culture in Loma Linda — including taking classes at Loma Linda Academy, making friends, and joining PossAbilities, a free community outreach program that offers disabled individuals who were born with or have permanent physical injury a sense of community.

Produced by Mound City Films, “Determination is Mine” distills the essence of Loma Linda University Health’s motto, “to make man whole. The film has screened at the Newport Beach and USA Film Festivals.

Director Patricia Kelikani captured footage and interviews both in Loma Linda and Afghanistan to create the film. "It was an honor to tell Malek's story of courageous transformation,” Kelikani said. “His determination to never give up encourages viewers to keep going despite whatever challenging circumstances we face.” Tickets may be purchased at the theatre box office and cost $8 Monday through Thursday.
